Annual variation in the physiology of 40 mm Mytilus edulis L. is studied under two conditions close to the field, an estuarine one which is rich in mineraI seston, another one stocked in a pond for one week and poor ln suspension as it is found during neap tide or in the oysters ponds. The seasonal changes in food consumption are calculated from the number of particles, quantity of chlorophyll and phaeopigment, quantity of total seston and mineraI biodeposition. The filtration and its changes are the same in both water conditions. They exhibited a maximum during late winter and spring (between 17.95 and 9.34 1.h-1 .gDW-1) and a minimum during the rest of the year (between 5.89 and 1.65 1. h-1. gDW-1). The quantity of particles retained and the quantity of... |

The study of cultivated ecosystems, once the trophic capacity ha! been determined and the molluscan stocks estimated, requires a knowledge of the evolution of the seasonal consumption of food by molluscs in natural conditions. For Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus edulis, Cerastoderma edule, Ruditapes philippinarum, the amount and quality of food have no effect on the filtration rate, except for the high load of mineraI seston. First an increase of the filtration rate was shown for Mytilus edulis and Cerastoderma edule at the end of winter and beginning of spring. Moreover Crassostrea gigas and Ruditapes philippinarum have shown no increase or only a small summer one. This evolution did not seem to be linked with the environmental conditions (temperature,... |
